Sane Guruji has become immortal due to his book Shyam’s Mother (Shyamchi Aai) written on his mother. The book introduces us to the importance of the mother’s rites in the formation of the child. Sane Guruji was a famous writer, teacher and social worker.
Sane Guruji’s full name was Pandurang Sadashiv Sane. He was born on 24th December 1899 at Palgad in Ratnagiri district. His mother’s name was Yashodabai Sadashiv Sane. He used to give full credit to his own mother for the way Sane Guruji lived his life.
After completing his education, Sane Guruji got a job as a teacher in Pratap Vidyalaya at Amalner in Jalgaon district. There he also ran a student dormitory. Sane Guruji taught the students lessons of self-reliance and discipline. In a short time, he became everyone’s favorite teacher.
Sane Guruji started a magazine called “Vidyarthi” in 1928. He also studied philosophy at the Pratap Philosophy Center, Amalner. The constructive effect of philosophy can be seen in his writings. Mahatma Gandhi had a great influence on his life. He has a history of wearing khadi cloth all his life.
Under the influence of Gandhiji, he took part in the civil disobedience movement in 1930. Sane Guruji was constantly opposed to caste discrimination, untouchability and undesirable norms in the society. In his later social life, he participated in the freedom movement many times. As a result, he was imprisoned several times.
While in prison in Nashik, he completed the writing of the book “Shyamchi Aai”, while in prison in Dhule he completed the writing of “Gitai” narrated by Acharya Vinoba Bhave. His later life was spent as a literary man.
Sane Guruji’s mind was very sensitive. He was frequently seen in his writings. He was extremely emotional towards every element of the society. Apart from writing literature, his life seems to be devoted to social work. He made Khandesh his karma bhoomi and increased social work.
He decided to set up an organization called “Antarbharati” to bridge the gap between provincialism, ethnicity and religion. He also sought financial and social assistance. But his dream did not come true as he ended his life on June 11, 1950.
His timeless song “Balsagar Bharat Hovo, Vishwat Shobhuni Raho” inspires patriotism even today. I hope that the Indian mind will continue to remember such a great and generous personality for years to come …
