Savitribai Phule, the first female teacher, wife of Mahatma Jotirao Phule, brought Indian women into the mainstream of education and gave women power an important place in society. Savitribai also played an important role in the social work of Mahatma Jotirao Phule.
Savitribai Phule was born on 3rd January 1831 at Naigaon in Satara district (Maharashtra, India). At the tender age of nine, Savitribai married Jotirao Phule. Jotirao himself was educated and also taught Savitribai.
Jotirao Phule and Savitribai had endured the ravages of caste, tradition and illiteracy. For this, he took a vow of lifelong social service to bring about a radical change in the society.
Knowing that education is not an option if we want to get rid of rituals and stereotypes against humanity, Mahatma Phule started the first school for girls in Budhwar Peth, Pune on January 1, 1848. There Savitribai worked as a teacher.
From Years 1848 to 1852, a phule couple established a total of 18 schools. Their school was registered with the government. At that time, on 12 February 1852, Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule were felicitated by Major Candy. It also announced government grants to schools.
In 1863, a maternity hospital was started by them setting up a home for the prevention of infanticide. Labor leader Narayan Lokhande staged a strike against Kesh vapana (Hair removal). He had the support and inspiration of Savitribai.
Born to a widowed mother, Yashwant was adopted by Savitribai who educated him and made him a doctor. In July 1887, Jotirao contracted paralysis. Savitribai served him during his illness. Jotirao died on November 28, 1890, after a long illness.
The plague had hit the Pune area between 1896-97. Many were dying from this deadly disease. Realizing this problem, Savitribai started a hospital for plague victims near Pune. While serving the plague patients, Savitribai also got plague.
Savitribai, who had fought against injustice all her life, failed to fight the plague and died on March 10, 1897 at the age of 66. Greetings from all the countrymen to Dnyanjyoti Savitribai Phule, the pioneer of Indian women’s liberation and women’s education.
